It is with great sadness that we have learned that longtime Board Member of The Genesis Foundation for Children and Celtics Legend and Hall of Famer John “Hondo” Havlicek has passed away at the age of 79.
“John Havlicek is one of the most accomplished players in Boston Celtics history, and the face of many of the franchise’s signature moments,’’ the Celtics said in their statement. “He was a great champion both on the court and in the community, winning 8 NBA championships and an NBA Finals MVP, while holding Celtics career records for points scored and games played. Named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, he is enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame and his retired #17 hangs in the Garden rafters. His defining traits as a player were his relentless hustle and wholehearted commitment to team over self.”
John and his wife Beth have been dedicated supporters of The Genesis Foundation since its inception 37 years ago – as dear friends of the Feingold family and selfless fundraisers for the organization. John was a champion in every sense of the word, in his sport and in his commitment to raising money for the Foundation for over three decades. Beth and he hosted the John Havlicek Celebrity Fishing Tournament on Nantucket and then Martha’s Vineyard for 34 years, and the Cape Cod Fall Classic as co-hosts for 11 years. The Genesis Foundation is forever grateful for the Havliceks’ dedication, loyalty, and impact on the care for children in New England for 37 years.
Thank you for everything, John. May you stay #ForeverGreen.
Sincerely,
Matthew Hoffman
